The best travel mugs keep your hot drinks hot and your cold drinks cold for hours. They are also lightweight, well-insulated, and—most importantly—leakproof. I can't tell you how many times I've wrongly put my faith into a travel mug on my way to work only to end up wearing my coffee or have a spill in my tote bag. Luckily, those days are behind me. I've finally found a perfectly reliable travel mug to take with me on the go, and so have several of our editors.

Below we rounded up our favorites for morning commutes to the office, long road trips, and cozy campfires. Our top picks barely take up any space in your backpack and offer smart features like splash-resistant lids, easy-to-grip handles, and wide openings for quick, on-the-go refills. Read on for our go-to travel mugs and tumblers from Owala, Yeti, Hydro Flask, and more.

Owala

Amazon

Owala

As a coffee devotee, I've tried my fair share of reusable travel mugs over the years, but this one is by far the best. You probably know Owala for its fun-colored water bottles, but its sleek travel mugs are equally worth the hype. Owala's SmoothSip tumbler features a splash-resistant lid and double-wall insulation, keeping hot drinks hot for 6 hours and cold for up to 24 hours. I fill it with hot coffee every morning on my way to the office and by lunchtime if I haven't finished it, I'm always surprised to find it still very warm.

My favorite feature, though, is its completely leakproof lid. When closed, I can comfortably toss it in my tote bag without any worry of it spilling all over my laptop. I even give it a good shake to mix my coffee and milk together and there are never any leaks in sight. My only con is that the brand recommends you hand wash the tumbler to keep its exterior in good condition (but truthfully, I've tossed it in the dishwasher a few times and it has held up just fine.) It's also available in a smaller 12-ounce version. —Meaghan Kenny, commerce editor

Yeti

Yeti

This mug is a thing in my house. My partner received one as a gift, only to find it missing every morning—truth be told, after I stole it once to use for hot coffee on my morning subway commute, I couldn’t go back to any other thermos. I personally love that this mug doesn’t have a handle, because it’s so insulated it never burns my hands, yet the coffee inside stays piping hot, and its shape is nice and easy to hold. When I’m done enjoying my hot drink on the go, it takes the least space possible in my bag, where it usually clangs around for the rest of the day until I make my way home (or back to wherever I’m staying). —Megan Spurrell, associate articles director

Capacity: 10 oz.

Hydro Flask

Hydro Flask

The 20-ounce version of Hydro Flask’s All Around Tumbler has been my go-to for over year, both at home and on the commute to work. It keeps coffee warm for a few hours, so if I’m sipping slowly I don’t have to bother with reheating it, and it does its job in keeping iced coffee cool, too. It has the type of lid that you can push back and forth to open or close, and the opening is wide enough to easily fit a reusable straw. I don’t drive, but the mug's size seems very cupholder-friendly, too! —Madison Flager, associate commerce director

Capacity: 20 oz.

Stanley

Stanley

Another favorite of mine is Stanley's AeroLight Transit bottle. It really is so good. I've been using it for a few years now to transport everything from hot coffee to cold brew, and there's no reheating or running to the refrigerator necessary. The best thing about it is that it's actually leakproof. I'm usually not very trusting of tossing mugs or water bottles in my bag, but with this one, I need not worry. I've even flipped it completely upside down and nothing spills out. I also appreciate how slim the bottle is—it's so easy to carry around and leaves room to spare in a lunch bag, backpack, or tote. If I'm low on space in my bag or just want something on the smaller side, this is the travel mug I reach for. —M.K.

Snow Peak

Snow Peak

Backcountry

This is one of those gifts I have become deeply attached to—it was given to me a few years ago, when I was getting really into camping and the chic outdoor brand Snow Peak, and it’s since become a staple in my house. It has a beautifully minimalist design, is small enough to feel really portable (as in, it’s not a pain to have to tote home once it’s empty), and it never leaks. It’s no bargain, but given how much I use and love it, I think the math sort of works out in the end. —M.S.

Urban Outfitters

After trying the Owala Freesip Twist, I finally understand why people become effusive about reusable bottles. The color is cute, the built-in straw is amazing—it completely stops you from accidentally spilling water down your chin after taking an enthusiastic chug—and I’ve experienced zero leaks whatsoever after slinging it into my backpack. And the fact that the Twist version works for hot liquids makes it even better value—it’ll see me right through summer season and into winter as well. I’m a complete convert. —Charley Ward, commerce writer, Condé Nast Traveller UK

Snow Peak

REI

Amazon

I’ve used my Snow Peak camping mug on my last two camping trips—once to Maine last summer, and more recently to Joshua Tree. It’s lightweight, but feels quite indestructible, and is very good at keeping my coffee hot or an iced drink nice and chilled. Highly recommend using it for a sneaky batched Negroni around the campfire. —Lale Arikoglu, articles director

Capacity: 14 oz.

Hydro Flask

Amazon

Hydro Flask

I am a Hydro Flask fan through and through. I use the brand's reusable water bottles daily and brought its soft, insulated cooler to the pool every weekend last summer. The brand's 16-ounce bottle is definitely one the best travel mugs on the market. I love the Flex Sip lid (it's completely leakproof) and the wide mouth, which makes it easy to clean and refill with lots of ice. The double-wall vacuum insulation keeps cold drinks cold for up to 24 hours and hot drinks hot for up to 12. More great features: The carry-handle makes it easy to hold on chilly morning walks and it's cupholder-friendly. —M.K.

This mug hits all the right marks: The silicone sleeve makes it easy to grip and quiet when placed down on a surface; the mouthpiece on the lid is easy to slide open and close; and it’s safe to put in the dishwasher and microwave. Plus, it just looks nicer than the rest of my logo-clad travel mugs. Most often I use it to sip coffee on my morning commute, but I have also brought it on longer train rides to DC and on flights as a vessel for oatmeal. —M.F.

Capacity: 16 oz.

Miir

Miir

Another favorite of mine is this insulated cup from Miir. While the lid means you can't just throw it in your bag, I do like that it feels more like an actual mug when I'm at my desk or around the campfire than something that's more of a tumbler. Best of all, my drink stays piping hot. —M.S.

Capacity: 12 oz.

Beysis

Beysis

This tumbler from Beysis has a sleek and simple leakproof design, and keeps drinks cold or hot for long periods of time. I use it daily for bringing my coffee to work (saving $6 a day, as well as reducing plastic cup use!), and it functions as my refillable water vessel for travel days. Plus, given its wide opening, it’s easy to clean as well, which is something I can’t say for some other reusable bottles I’ve tried to use in the past. —Matt Ortile, associate editor
